The toilet water is white! Why is there no mosquito at the flower fair? This is a large area free of mosquito pests in China

"It's been two hours since we entered the garden. There are so many flowers and plants, and we haven't been bitten by mosquitoes. It's amazing!" The 10th China Flower Expo has opened in Shanghai. Ms. Li and her wife are enjoying the exhibition in chongming Flower Expo Garden, and are pleasantly surprised with the feeling: "Toilet water is all white!"

As Shanghai enters the hot and humid summer, mosquitoes are frequent in other parts of the city. Why can the Flower Expo Park with 370,000 square meters of ecological water system and 1.37 million square meters of green landscape be so rare?

View news on jiefang daily, the reporter understands, originally from east China normal university at the forefront of the interdisciplinary team for this flower exposition provides a full range of ecological mosquito control scheme, for tourists set his mind at to enjoy flower sets a primitive anti-mosquito barrier, making it the vast area of no mosquito pollution in our country, make the ecological island opened flowers of "happiness".

It is reported that the core product of the ecological mosquito control program of the Flower Expo is s-enyl ester, a green biological pesticide. Traditional chemical pesticides have the disadvantages of increased resistance, environmental pollution and ecological destruction, while S-enzoester is non-toxic to people, livestock and other organisms, environmentally friendly, and no residue, and is mostly used in silkworm culture, mushroom cultivation and other organic cultivation, grain storage protection, animal husbandry ecological breeding, pet health, family health and other fields.

As a kind of insect growth regulator, the biochemical structure and mechanism of S-enyl ester are "natural", which can selectively act on insect pests and interfere with the growth and development cycle of insects by regulating the level of juvenile hormone, so as to achieve the goal of reducing mosquito species without eliminating mosquito species.

As we all know, mosquitoes cannot grow without water. Female mosquitoes usually lay their eggs in stagnant water areas such as ponds, ditches, flower POTS and the bottom of flower POTS. They can develop into adult mosquitoes in more than ten days. S-enalworm products are put into these waters and continue to work, keeping the larvae in the larval stage and unable to develop into adults. These larvae are easy to be eaten by natural enemies such as fish or gradually become sick and die.

It is not difficult for visitors to find that the garden is full of colorful flowers. Although there are no mosquitoes in the garden, the butterflies are charming and enjoyable, and the experience of flower appreciation is constantly upgraded. "Unlike other insecticides that are 'all in one pot', our pest control solution is' friendly and different '." Chongming Ecological Research Institute vice president Zhao Changqing said.

During the release process, the concentration of S-enyl ester in the water was strictly controlled at 5 to 10 PPB units. That's high enough to be effective against mosquitoes but harmless to dragonflies, butterflies and other insects. "S-enyl ester is almost impossible to smell when it is released. Only in high concentrations can it smell a slight fruity aroma, and it can be metabolized and degraded into water and carbon dioxide in the body and environment of mammals. It is an environmentally friendly pesticide."

The no. 1 document of the Central Government this year once again mentioned "continuously promoting the reduction and efficiency of chemical fertilizers and pesticides", and it is urgent to promote green biochemical pesticides and comprehensive ecological governance.

As one of the successful biochemical pesticides in the world, S-enyl ester has been widely used in the United States, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and other countries. However, due to the classification of biochemical pesticides in China, the approval of its use in China is still in the initial stage. In 2018, under the support of Qian Xuhong, president of East China Normal University and an expert on chemical and pesticide science, China National Institute for Pesticide Control evaluated and identified S-enyl ester as a biochemical pesticide. Subsequently, in 2019, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs confirmed that biochemical pesticides belong to biological pesticides under the promotion of Qian Xuhong's argument again. This has laid a foundation for s-enyl ester to help Chongming Flower Fair and its widespread application in China.

Since last summer, Sun Zhenrong, the vice president of ECNU in charge of "ecology +", has led a team of experts from various functional departments, including the Science and Technology Department, the School of Ecology and Environmental Science, chongming Ecological Research Institute, and the School of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering to start designing the scheme. After 8 months of repeated investigation, research and experiment, under the guidance of the Municipal Health Commission and the Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention, a set of ecological mosquito control plan tailored for the Flower Expo finally came out. During this period, the project team also conducted several "exercises" in the two campuses of EAST China Normal University, which made full preparations for the program to be put into use.

In early March this year, the program was put into effect in north Garden and Dongping town of the Flower Fair. After the official opening of the Flower Expo on May 21, the temperature is expected to rise gradually, and the plum rain season is getting closer and closer, so the drop of S-enyl esters will only increase. Although the battle line is long and the workload is heavy, some people are buried in the laboratory, while others stick to the Garden. The whole project team is going all out to successfully host the Flower Fair and fight for the ecological island.

It is worth mentioning that s-enyl ester derivatives used in this year's Flower Expo are all produced by ecNU alumni enterprises, which is one of the enterprises that produce S-enyl ester in large quantities in China. The CEO of this high-tech biochemical technology company is Su Heng, a 75th alumnus of the Department of Chemistry of East China Normal University. Twenty years ago, the "double post-doc" with an entrepreneurial dream "returnees". By 2018, after the company obtained the national biochemical pesticide qualification, it began to cooperate with the Alma mater to transform scientific and technological achievements, and jointly promote the RESEARCH and development of S-enyl ester and domestic promotion and application.

Will there be no mosquitoes after the flower fair?

The focus of the Expo is on green, healthy and sustainable development. In the overall plan of ecological mosquito control at ecNU Flower Fair, another key part is the plan of "Vector emergency management and Long-term ecological control in Flower Fair Park" led by Professor Da Liangjun from The School of Ecology and Environmental Sciences, to build an environmentally friendly and sustainable comprehensive ecological vector control system.

It is reported that during the operation period of the Flower Fair, the team will continue to monitor the impact of the use of biochemical pesticides on vectors and other organisms in the park and surrounding areas, evaluate its ecological effects, and implement comprehensive ecological prevention and control and monitoring. And flower Po "after" period, the team will also by vector biological natural habitat construction and optimization restoration, ecological construction of farmland, agriculture, forestry and wet integration, etc., to carry out the amphibian populations rejuvenation, bird populations attract, small invertebrates introduced, such as increasing the number of natural enemy species mosquito vectors, such as biological, restore ecosystem trophic level, more Enhance the long-term and normal effects of downlink control. "Our approach combines environmental management, ecological regulation, physical control and biochemical pesticides, giving full play to interdisciplinary advantages." "Said zhang Ying, a member of the team.

Moreover, on the basis of the Huabao project, the alumni company continued to deepen cooperation with experts from the School of Chemical and Molecular Engineering and the School of Ecological and Environmental Sciences to develop new s-enyl ester analogues. At present, three compounds developed showed higher bioactivity than commercial S-enyl esters. The two parties jointly applied for the agricultural science and technology projects in the 2021 "Science and Technology Innovation Action Plan" of Shanghai and jointly built a joint laboratory.

Academician Qian Xuhong expressed her hope that Chongming, the estuary of the Yangtze River Basin, the pearl of the Yangtze River Delta and the backyard garden of Shanghai, will be built into an ecological island that radiates back to the mainland and leads green development, making greater contributions to the realization of the national goal of carbon peak and carbon reduction.
